Some Tennessee Teachers Could Go Armed Under Advancing Bill

A proposal meant to put more armed guards in Tennessee schools has begun moving forward in the General Assembly. It offers money for schools to hire retired police officers and allows teachers with law enforcement backgrounds to carry a gun to class.

Whether a retired officer hired part-time as a security guard or a teacher already on the payroll, both would have to go through at least 40 hours of special training.

Stewart Co. Closes Schools for Second Time This Year

Stewart County, Tennessee schools are closing due to student illness for the second time this year. Transportation Director Eric Watkins says because a large number of students are out sick, the district will not hold classes tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

Three Regional Schools Get or Renew Accreditation

Three area school systems have achieved voluntary school accreditation. Graves County Schools and Marshall County Schools have first-time accreditation from the AdvancED/Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). McCracken County Schools renewed its accreditation.

A Kentucky state lawmaker wants to expand EpiPen use in schools. EpiPens are used to stop the effects of allergic reactions, and currently, state law only allows students with allergies to carry the devices. But Representative Addia Wuchner says not all students are aware of their allergies, and she will again file a bill that would allow schools to carry EpiPens for general use.

Toyota gives grant to help early childhood academies

Automaker Toyota is helping Kentucky schools expand an early childhood learning program.

Toyota is giving $115,000 to open 10 more Born Learning programs in the commonwealth. The 10 elementary schools are Hiseville Elementary in Glasgow; Crabbe Elementary in Ashland; Burgin Elementary in Burgin; May Valley Elementary in Prestonsburg; Grandview Elementary in Bellevue; East Calloway Elementary in Murray; H.W. Wilkey Elementary in Leitchfield; Berea Elementary in Berea; Farley Elementary in Paducah; and Boston Elementary in New Haven.

IL Schools May Charge for Bus Rides

Illinois Education officials are considering a proposal to let schools stop offering free bus service as another way to cope with the state's budget crisis. In legislation that may be offered this week, the State Board of Education could ask to either get rid of the buses or charge for carrying students each day. The change would be part of a new system for distributing state money for student transportation. The Illinois Association of School Boards says transportation spending has been slashed 42% since 2010.
