"The Wonder of Learning" Reggio Emilia's Educational Philosophy Comes to Henderson

"The Wonder of Learning - The Hundred Languages of Children" is an exhibition of the infant-toddler Centers and Preschools of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, Italy, at the Henderson Community College Fine Arts Center. This Thursday through Saturday there's a conference featuring speakers from the schools of Reggio Emilia, and it's still open for attendance. Kate Lochte asked Murray State College of Education's Dr. Jo Robertson, Chair of Early Childhood and Elementary Education to explain what the Reggio Emilia philosophy of Education is about. Patriot Coal Agrees to Close Mountaintop Removal Mines

A St. Louis-based coal company with mines throughout the region has agreed to phase out its mountaintop removal sites. Patriot Coal agreed to the measure as part of a settlement that grants the company more time to control water pollution at its mines in West Virginia.

Area Code Meeting in Henderson

West Kentucky residents have a chance today to give their opinions on a new area code that will be needed in the region during a meeting in Henderson. The Kentucky Public Service Commission is holding meetings in several cities on the issue prior to its implementation in early 2014. The PSC says area code 364 could be applied as an overlay, meaning it would be used in all of western Kentucky in addition to the existing 270 area code. The other option would divide western Kentucky and assign either area code to specific areas. The meeting is at 6 p.m.

N. Y. Company Buys Interest in Ellis Park

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has approved a bid from Saratoga Harness Racing Inc. to purchase a minority interest in Ellis Park.

The Gleaner reports Saratoga, which owns Saratoga Casino and Raceway in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., will pay $4 million in the deal that calls for a 30-percent ownership stake and oversight of all activities at the track, including the newly installed instant racing machines.

Henderson County Approves Coal Severance Funds Application

The Henderson County Fiscal Court approved a resolution to join 2 other counties in giving away $720,000 in coal severance tax revenues. Court Clerk Sue Baker says the application will go to Union and Webster Counties for approval next month before being sent to The Department for Local Government in Frankfort for final approval. $500,000 would go to expand the Hugh Edward Sandefur Training Center which employs vocationally challenged people. The rest would go to the Reggio Children North American Exhibit.
