Curbside Recycling Program Saving Madisonville Money

Madisonville’s new curbside recycling program is bringing down city sanitation costs. City Sanitation Superintendent Robert Janes says when more people recycle the city makes more money from material sales, and spends less money on dumping fees. Janes says about 25 percent of city residents are using the free program, which started October first. He says they’re now trying to expand it. He says,

“The ultimate goal for us is to do curbside recycling every week instead of every other week, and then doing our trash pickup every other week. That’s our ultimate goal.”

Paducah Recycler Cutting Back on Services

Low market prices for recycled materials are causing big cutbacks at a Paducah recycling facility. Greater Paducah Sustainability – RecycleNow is a non-profit company that works with the city and county to sell recycled materials to brokers. RecycleNow manager Merle Paschedag says prices for some materials are half of what they were last year. Paschedag says the facility will lay off two full-time employees, and cut their four remaining workers back to 30 hours a week. He says they will also stop all glass collection and cut back drive through drop off hours.

Madisonville Takes Next Step in Curbside Recycling Program

Madisonville’s Sanitation Department will seek bids next week for nearly 1,000 curbside recycling totes. The city approved curbside recycling in May. Sanitation director Robert Janes says the bids will be accepted on August 17th with the first totes delivered to customers in Mid September. Janes says the city’s recycling will be done in-house at the new recycling facility. Pickups will begin October 1st and will be bi-weekly on normal trash pickup days.
