KY Jobless Rate Drops to 7.9% in April ‘13

The Kentucky Office of Employment and Training said the commonwealth’s April unemployment rate has fallen 0.3 percent from a year ago and has dropped a tenth of a point from March 2013.

Kentucky’s 7.9 percent rate reflects a similar trend in national numbers over the same period.

A nonprofit group says the number of young adults in Kentucky and around the nation not in school unemployed has skyrocketed since 2000. The Annie E. Casey Foundation released a report Monday blaming the problem on competition from older workers due to the recession and not being ready for college after high school graduation.

The latest Kentucky job numbers show Fulton County still has highest unemployment rate in the Commonwealth at just over 16.5 percent. Still, the state Office of Employment and Training reports most counties improved in September, with jobless rates increasing in only 12. Woodford County had the lowest at 5.3 percent. Union County posted the lowest numbers in western Kentucky at almost 6 percent. Calloway was next, just under half a point higher.

Kentucky's jobless rate has risen to 8.3 percent in the most recent Office of Employment and Training report. Government economist Manoj Shanker says the slight uptick in unemployment isn't enough to conclude that the state's economy has weakened. The increase came despite a strong showing in some job sectors.

Kentucky's jobless rate fell again last month. The latest figures from the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training say the May rate was down to 8.2 percent, a tenth of a percent decrease from April.
