Boston Architect Designs Soaring Center Building for Discovery Park of America in Union City

Obion County, Tennessee, looks to a fantastic new attraction near Union City to bring many thousands of visitors annually. The Robert E. and Jenny D. Kirkland Foundation is Discovery Park’s principal benefactor. Mr. Kirkland ultimately chose Louis Siriani to be the architect for the 100,000 square foot center of the new 50-acre Discovery Park of America. Since 1984, Siriani's been a principal of the Boston architectural firm Verner Johnson, Inc, which specializes in planning and designing museums which in this country alone draw millions of visitors a year. Mr. Siriani has planned and designed science and technology, history, and multi-disciplinary museums all over the country and the world. He spoke with Kate Lochte about working with Mr. Kirkland and the Union City community for this ambitious project.

Fire Destroys Union City Recycling Center

A fire has destroyed Union City, Tennessee’s recycling center. Union City Fire Lieutenant James Rhamy says the fire began around midday yesterday at Greenway Recover & Recycle, located in the city's industrial park. Rhamy says used cardboard caught fire, destroying the center and burning woods around it.

Tennessee National Guardsmen Return to Union City

About 150 Guardsmen from Union City are among the more than 300 Tennessee Army National Guard members flying home this week after a year's deployment in the Middle East. Guard officials say they’re from the 913th Engineer Company. They’ll arrive Thursday after processing at Fort Bliss, Tex.

West Tennessee Child Missing 24 Years

As the disappearance of Marlena Childress from her Union City home reaches its 25th anniversary, the lead investigator says he thinks about her every day. Marlena was three years old when she disappeared on April 16, 1987. A massive search turned up no trace of her. Then, her mother told police she accidentally killed Marlena and put her body in the Obion River - a confession she soon recanted. Union City Police Lieutenant Andy Gibson tells KYTN radio as investigative techniques have advanced, they’ve put DNA samples from the child into a national database.

Union City Democrat to Run for 24th District Seat

Three candidates for Northern Tennessee’s 24^th Senatorial District seat have filed petition to run for the office in August. Martin Community Development Director Brad Thompson is the sole Democrat on the ballot. Thompson says he wants to bring compromise to the position.

“You know there’s enough of the partisan bickering. I want to work with both parties to make progress on what matters. I’ll consider a good idea from anybody. Good ideas are just that: a good idea, and they don’t come with party labels.”

Union City Pastor Arrested on Solicitation Charges from Virginia

The Pastor of Union City’s First Church of God is in jail charged with online sexual solicitation charges. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reports police arrested 34-year-old Grady Evans on Tuesday on a fugitive warrant from Virginia.

Evans is charged with using a communications device to solicit a minor. Police from Fairfax County, Va., and Union City assisted with the arrest and search of the church.

Lennox Hearth for sale

The Lennox Hearth fireplace plant in Union City is up for sale, according to a statement from the company. Lennox Hearth Products is based in Nashville and has manufacturing facilities in Union City, Auburn, Wash., and Laval, Quebec, Canada. The company announced it intends to sell three of its plants, including the one in Union City, due to low market demand. The Union City plant employs between 200 and 250 workers. The company has not announced when or if the sale would affect employees.
