Traffic Accidents in Ohio, Hopkins Counties Due to Ice

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Crews are reporting several accidents in the area due to icy conditions. KYTC spokesperson Keith Todd says highways through Hopkins, Muhlenberg and Ohio Counties have glazed over. An accident involving three semi trucks on Western Kentucky Parkway at the 84 mile marker in Ohio County is blocking all but one eastbound lane. Tow trucks are having diffuculty with the accident due to icing conditions.

Transportation Crews Prepare for Winter Storm

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews plan to pre-treat area highways ahead of freezing rain, sleet and snow expected to sweep through the region Thursday night into Friday. National Weather Service forecasters predict up to two inches of snow along a line north of Cape Girardeau to Madisonville with a mix of sleet freezing rain and snow south of that line. NWS officials say the forecast may change.

Part of Pennyrile Parkway Closed

UPDATED: 3 p.m.

A portion of the Pennyrile Parkway was closed this afternoon after the cab of a tanker truck carrying hydrochloric acid caught fire this morning. Both north and southbound lanes from the 49 to 54 mile markers are now open. However, only the left southbound lane is open, so expect some traffic as crews continue some environmental remediation work.

U. S. 45 Road Work Expected Over Next Several Months

Drivers could encounter road work near Mayfield over the next several months as crews widen a portion of U. S. 45 to four lanes. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says the half-mile roadway creates a constant bottleneck problem for the 11,000 vehicles that use it each day.

Drilling Work Finished at New Bridge Site

A drilling crew has finished geotechnical work at the site of the new Kentucky Lake bridge. KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says the drilling rig finished collecting soil and rock samples from planned pier locations yesterday.

Last Round of Drilling Wrapping Up at Bridge Site

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet hopes to complete this week what could be the last round of geotechnical work at the new Kentucky Lake bridge site. A drilling rig has been on site over the last few weeks gathering data on bridge pier placement. KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says drilling should finish this week.

Bridge Fire Closes Road

KY-1037 (also known as Gore Road and Crap Shoot Road) remains closed for the several days near Clinton due to an early morning fire on a wooden railroad overpass. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the fire mostly damaged the railing; and the fire may have been deliberately set. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Canadian National Railroad, and local officials are working to replace the bridge with a modern concrete structure. Construction is expected to start sometime late this year or early next year.

Bridge Work Continues

As some workers secure the new span of US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge on its piers, other are preparing for the next phase of bridge repair. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Spokesman Keith Todd says they will soon be pouring concrete for the road bed. Todd says workers are hustling to finish repairs...

"At this point so far as we know we’re still on schedule to have it done by Memorial Day. The contractor will be working around the clock to finish out the steel work, put in rebar and get it ready for the concrete."

Bridge Prep Work Nearing Completion

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews are expected to finish work preparing the Eggners Ferry Bridge for repair work by early next week. Workers are replacing guard rails and removing concrete debris from the bridge deck ahead of a crew from Hall Contracting of Kentucky. Hall Contracting was hired in March to replace the 322-foot span of bridge which collapsed when the Delta Mariner cargo ship struck the bridge. KYTC spokesperson Keith Todd says the cabinet is hesitant to set dates for the repairs.
