Overlay Option Chosen for New Western KY Area Code

The Kentucky Public Service Commission has approved a new area code for western Kentucky. The new area code, 364, will be added to the current 270 footprint in early 2014. PSC Spokesman Andrew Melnykovich says with the overlay people who currently use 270 won’t have to change numbers, but there will be a different dialing pattern.

The cell phone boom has resulted in using nearly all of the numbers available with the current 270 area code. The new area code would be designated as 364.

Area Code Meeting in Henderson

West Kentucky residents have a chance today to give their opinions on a new area code that will be needed in the region during a meeting in Henderson. The Kentucky Public Service Commission is holding meetings in several cities on the issue prior to its implementation in early 2014. The PSC says area code 364 could be applied as an overlay, meaning it would be used in all of western Kentucky in addition to the existing 270 area code. The other option would divide western Kentucky and assign either area code to specific areas. The meeting is at 6 p.m.

The meeting about the new area code for western Kentucky drew a small audience Wednesday. Only three people attended meeting at Hopkinsville Community College. The Kentucky Public Service Commission will hold a series of public meetings across the 270 area code to discuss creating a new one for all or part of western Kentucky. The commission has scheduled six meetings throughout October. Area code 270 is expected to run out of available numbers by the beginning of 2014. The PSC is considering an overlay of a second area code as well as a split assigning the area code 364 to part of the 270 territory. Meetings will be held in Hopkinsville on Oct. 17, Paducah on Oct. 18, Henderson on Oct. 22, Owensboro on Oct. 24, Bowling Green on Oct.
