TN Police Step Up DUI Enforcement for New Year's

Tennessee law enforcement will be using the new "no refusal" law over the weekend before New Year's Eve that allows police to get blood samples of suspected drunken drivers. Previously drivers in Tennessee could refuse a blood alcohol content test but they would face losing their licenses for violating the "implied consent" law. The law passed this year allows police to seek search warrants for blood samples. Police have held "no refusal" enforcement periods during several holidays this year.

Pittman Sentenced to 15 Years in Jail

A Marshall County jury has recommended the maximum sentence of 15 years of jail time for a Paducah woman convicted of second-degree manslaughter, first-degree wanton endangerment and DUI. Stephen “Jimmy” Harper was killed when Tiffany Pittman hit his truck with her car in Marshall County last year.

A Marshall County jury will be back in session Tuesday to recommend a sentence for a 20-year-old woman convicted last week of second-degree manslaughter, wanton endangerment and drunken driving in a 2011 traffic death. After three days of testimony and more than four hours of deliberation the jury returned the verdict against Tiffany Pittman.

A Hopkinsville police officer is charged with driving under the influence following an incident over the weekend. Sgt. John Thompson ran into and over parking lot barriers at the Eagles Club Saturday. His blood-alcohol level was .20. Kentucky’s legal limit is point .08.

Kentucky "Drive Sober" Campaign Results in Over 1,600 Citations

Kentucky’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement effort resulted in 1,636 citations for drunken driving this year. The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety coordinated campaign with 200 state and local law enforcement agencies from August 17th to September 3rd. The federally funded effort also led to over 1,400 felony arrests and thirteen hundred 1,300 drug arrests. State Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock says the campaign is meant to educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.

Former Judge Faces DUI Charges

A former Calloway County district judge and current alcohol education coordinator is in court next week on a Driving Under the Influence charge. Jeanne Carroll is set for arraignment in Calloway County Circuit Court on Tuesday for a DUI first offense. Murray State University Police arrested Carroll around 1:30 pm on October 2 in a campus parking lot. Police received a call of a possible medical emergency near the Information and Technology building. A report WKMS obtained through an Open Records request says Carroll smelled strongly of alcohol and had trouble speaking and standing.

Principal Placed on Administrative Leave After DUI

Clarksville-MontgomeryCounty School System officials have placed the principal of the district’s Alternative School on administrative leave pending investigation of his driving under the influence charge. Police arrested Principal Ed Stephens after he failed a sobriety test following a stop on Fort Campbell Boulevard Saturday night. Police said Stephens admitted he had been drinking. The system’s At-Risk Coordinator Doctor Kim Sigears takes over administration at the Alternative School.

Clarksville Principal Charged with DUI

A Clarksville, Tenn., school principal is free on bond today following his arrest on charges of driving under the influence and possession of a handgun. The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle reports police stopped Alternative School Principal Eduard Michael Stephens, 55, in his truck Saturday night on Fort Campbell Boulevard. Police say Stephens admitted to having had two rum and Cokes, then failed a sobriety test. Stephens is free on $750 bail. The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System plans to review the case today.
