The former Miss America has joined a list of half a dozen party activists or leaders waiting for Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes to decide whether she'll run in 2014 against Mitch McConnell for his U.S. Senate seat.

If Grimes runs, she's likely to get enough support to clear out the field. Otherwise, the Democrats have potential candidates known within political circles, but who may be not instantly recognizable with the majority of voters—former state Democratic Party Chairman Bill Gorman or environmental activist Tom FitzGerald, for example.

Grimes Schedules Meetings on Early Voting Across KY

Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes has begun a series of meetings across the commonwealth to gauge public support for early voting.

Current law allows only limited early voting by absentee ballots, which are reserved for people who can’t get to the polls because of out-of-town travel, military service or health concerns.

His campaign has collected thousands of documents pertaining to Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, a Kentucky Democrat considering running against McConnell now that Judd is not. The documents obtained by The Associated Press include travel invoices for Grimes and her staff, even reams of letters from people wanting to be Kentucky Colonels, an honorary designation handled by her office.

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes says the deadline is 4 p.m. Eastern Time Friday. Write-in candidates for offices that file with the county clerk must file by 4 p.m. local time Friday. Grimes says under Kentucky law, write-in candidates have to file a declaration of intent and pay a filing fee. Write-in candidates for president and vice president must file a list of presidential electors pledged to the candidates.
