Youth Report: Not So Fast, All About LBL's Turtle Derby

Earlier this month, over 16 million viewers tuned in to watch the 139th annual Kentucky Derby. To celebrate the event, the Nature Station at Land Between the Lakes held their own, much slower race: the Kentucky Turtle Derby. WKMS Youth Reporter Aaron Sikkel covered the event and sat down with Naturalist Aviva Yasgur to learn about how turtles contribute to the region's ecosystem. Temporary Closures at LBL Including Turkey Bay OHV Area

From Press Release: Land Between The Lakes (LBL) received excessive rainfall throughout the day Saturday leading to extremely saturated soil conditions that caused the temporary closure of Turkey Bay Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area, as of April 29th, until further notice. Turkey Bay management will re-evaluate trail conditions as the weather improves.

Volunteers Needed for LBL Cleanup

Volunteers are needed for Land Between The Lakes annual spring cleanup April 13. Volunteers will spruce up the Turkey Bay Off-Highway Vehicle Area trails plant trees, pick up litter and performing trail maintenance.

Land Between the Lakes: New Season, Fee Changes

In December, we reported that Land Between the Lakes will have to cut $1 million from their annual operating budget, following across-the-board budget reduction for all national parks. A Book of Homeplace History and Recipes

Paducah resident Gerry Marshall has a degree in zoology from the University of Kentucky. She’s published a number of books, as well as over 100 articles, stories and poems for both children and adults. Her most recent work involves LBL’s Homeplace 1850 and documents recipes from the mid 19th century that have not been well-documented to date. The Homeplace History and Receipt Book: History, Folklore, and Recipes from Life on an Upper Southern Farm a Decade before The Civil War is available at amazon.com.

Road Restrictions in Land Between the Lakes

Lane restrictions in parts of Land Between the Lakes National Recreation area begin today as workers begin to install fiber optic cable lines to improve communications in the forest. The work starts today along Forest Road 165 near Wranglers Campground and is expected to last about 30 days. Expect one-lane traffic with alternating flow.

TVA Hacking Program in 80's Results in Robust Eagle Populations in West Ky

Dr. Steve White joined Murray State University in 1981 about the same time as the local TVA hacking program was underway. Captive-born eaglets were released into the wild without human contact to repopulate the region whose habitat is preferred by eagles. Eagles stay where they learn to fly and today the resident population is stable and thriving. Dr. White gives the historical perspective.

The Kentucky Supreme Court could rule soon on the case of a high school student charged and convicted after admitting to his school principal and the resource officer that he shared prescription pain pills. The student says he wasn’t read his rights and that the confession shouldn’t have been used against him at trial. The court’s ruling could change the way school administrators handle discipline problems, and we’ll bring you the details.

Youth Report: LBL Fossil Hunt

Did you know that this region was once part of an ancient body of water called the Western Interior Seaway? A large inland sea pushed countless numbers of fossils into this area in the mid-to-late Cretaceous period. WKMS Youth Reporter Aaron Sikkel went on a fossil hunt at Land Between the Lakes with Naturist Andrea Woody in search for Brachiopods, Trilobites, and other weird looking creatures that called western Kentucky home over a billion years ago.
