Terra: Annual Lower Town Arts Festival a Success

Organizers say the weekend’s Paducah Lower Town Arts and Music Festival was another success.

A double-digit percentage increase in visitors, several new events and some tweaks to the regular line-up of events led to what co-director Michael Terra called a tremendous weekend of festival food and fun.

Some 14,000-16,000 visitors swarmed Paducah’s lower-town district for new events like the “Top Potter” event, which featured nearly a dozen local artists in a timed competition.

TVA’s Shawnee Fossil Plant faces an uncertain future as the Knoxville-based utility company begins retiring coal-powered energy plants.

Yesterday, as part of an ongoing effort to clean up non-renewable energy stations, TVA announced plans to retire 18 of 59 fossil units region-wide by 2018.

PED Says 450 Jobs Coming to Paducah

Paducah Economic Development officials say they've signed a deal that will bring 450 jobs to the area. Development President Chad Chancellor tells The Paducah Sun the agency has an agreement with Colorado-based Teletech Holdings, which has promised 450 call center jobs that have an average wage of $9.50 an hour.

Raney Files as Write-In for Paducah Mayor's Seat

A Paducah woman has filed as a write-in candidate for the city’s mayoral race. Renee Raney filed her candidacy with the McCracken County Clerk’s office yesterday. Raney’s name will not appear on the ballot, but her write-in votes may be counted. Mayoral candidate Robert Coleman announced he would drop out last week due to health concerns, leaving Gayle Kaler running unopposed.
