Quarterly Alcohol Report Shows Increase in City Tax Revenue, DUIs

Quarterly profits from alcohol sales in Murray are going up as the city continues to fill the number of package stores the state permits.

Murray Police Sergeant Kendra Clere says the city’s 8 percent sales tax on alcohol has brought in almost $193,000 since January.

Clere told the City Council yesterday that DUIs and alcoholic intoxication charges have also risen, but says she expects those numbers with more officers working DUI calls.

Princeton’s city council voted last night to pass the second reading of their new alcohol ordinance. Mayor Gayle Cherry says applications will now be accepted for the city’s two available liquor store licenses. She says it will be at least a couple of months before the stores open. City residents voted in August to go wet. The proposed measure allows businesses to sell alcohol from 7 a.m. to midnight, except on Sunday. Liquor stores may not be located within 1,000 feet of a school or within 200 feet of a church.

Murray City Council Approves Second Reading of Alcohol Ordinance

Individuals can start applying for packaged liquor licenses in Murray. City Council members passed the second reading of the alcohol ordinance last night in an 8 to 3 vote. Residents voted in July to move from liquor by the drink sales at restaurants to a fully wet city. The ordinance sets an 8 percent regulatory tax for both restaurants and packaged stores. Hours of operation are 6 AM to midnight, and Sunday sales are prohibited.
