Murray State President Randy Dunn has been selected to be Youngstown State University's next president. The Youngstown State Board of Trustees authorized board Chair Sudershan Garg and Vice Chair John Jakubek to negotiate and execute an employment contract with Dunn. Garg emphasized that the appointment is not final until contract terms can be reached.

Murray State University’s Board of Regents Chairman Constantine Curris will begin the work of forming a search committee for a new MSU president in the coming weeks. The board voted Friday morning for a second time, 7 to 4, against extending President Randy Dunn a new contract. The second vote came after Kentucky’s Attorney General declared an illegal meeting occurred at social gathering for a majority of regents the night before the board’s first vote.

Murray State University’s Board of Regents Chairman wants to vote again on President Randy Dunn’s contract on Friday. Board Chairman Constantine Curris released a statement Wednesday asking the board to vote again to reinforce the board’s responsibility to act in an open and transparent manner.

The board first voted against extending Dunn a new contract on March 15^th following a social gathering at a regent’s home. The Kentucky Attorney General has since deemed the gathering, where a quorum was present and university business was discussed, an illegal board meeting.

Lexington Attorney, Jim Deckard stands by his request that the Murray State Board of Regents should declare votes cast the day after an illegal meeting null and void. Deckard requested the board take action in an initial complaint on March 22^nd regarding a social gathering of six regents the night before the board’s quarterly meeting. Deckard, following a denial from MSU, issued an appeal to the Kentucky Attorney General on April 1^st. The Attorney General declared the social gathering of a quorum of regents illegal because board business was discussed and there were no minutes taken at the illegal meeting.

Kentucky’s Attorney General says the Murray State Board of Regents violated Kentucky’s open meetings law when a quorum of the board attended a social gathering at the home of Regent Sharon Green on March 14^th. Lexington Attorney Jim Deckard sought the opinion after board Chairman Constantine Curris, through an attorney, denied allegations of an illegal meeting.

Dr. Richard Hurt of the Mayo Clinic is known internationally for his work on nicotine dependence. MSU’s board of regents voted 7 to 4 on March 15th not to renew president Dunn’s contract. Hurt, in his letter, encourages Dunn to fight his termination in court.

In response to an Open Records request, Murray State’s Board of Regents has released the ad hoc report upon which Regents based their decision not to renew President Randy Dunn’s contract. That report contains some data that is also part of our SACS reaccreditation process, which is entering its most critical period. If this report is credible and sufficiently negative to justify non-renewal of the President’s contract, it could have a direct, substantial and negative impact on our reaccreditation effort.

Murray State University President Randy Dunn is speaking out publicly for the first time regarding a draft report from a Board of Regents ad-hoc contract review committee. The report depicts university progress and/or lack thereof during Dunn’s six year tenure. Faculty Senate and Staff Congress members questioned board chairman Dr. Constantine Curris about many aspects of the report this week. Curris stands by the work. Dunn takes issue with a number of elements, “I think on the academic performance side, to some degree, there was a little bit of cherry picking that went on to make a worse case than what exists,” Dunn said.
