Boating Accident on Kentucky Lake Kills Fisherman

A fisherman was killed in a boating accident Thursday afternoon on Kentucky Lake near Marshall County. Timothy Alan Clippard, 51, of Jackson, Mo., was steering his boat under the Eggners Ferry Bridge when he struck an underwater pier structure.

Fishing has really started to pick up lately. Maybe fish can sense that summer is almost done, and the lean days of winter aren’t that far away. For whatever reason, the bass are on the prowl on the ledges and starting to move in some toward the coves and points. Good catches have been reported on crankbaits, jigs and shaky heads on the ledges and main-lake points, and a few topwater fish are coming in the back ends of coves.

Kentucky has been the home of bass fishing for some time, and while the sport is a statewide obsession, not until this year has it been officially incorporated into the high school sports spectrum. The Kentucky High School Sports Association made a decision last month to include bass fishing as a varsity sport across the commonwealth. Drew Adams has more.

Last week, the South Fulton city commission passed the first reading of an ordinance that would allow the fire department to respond to rural fire calls.

Governor Steve Beshear's constitutional amendment to legalize casinos in Kentucky passed the Senate's State and Local Government committee 7-4 today.

KHSAA Adds Bass Fishing as Varsity Sport

Kentucky is the second state in the nation to adopt Bass Fishing as a varsity high school sport. Illinois was the first. The Kentucky High School Athletics Association (KHSAA) reports the inaugural season will begin February 2013 and end in April, culminating in a state championship at the Land between the lakes. KHSAA Sports Information Officer Elden May says there are many entities which are looking to assist in funding.
