We continue to operate a news internship
recruiting and training Murray State University students, undergraduate
and graduate students, without prior broadcasting experience.
The students acquire news reporting, research, writing, and
digital editing skills. Of these students two advanced to on-air
feature production and performance.
WKMS maintains an open door for students
who wish to job shadow from the local school systems. We have
enjoyed new relationships from these monthly day-long employment
modeling visits. The students have been of middle school and
high school age and we've had one per semester up until this
semester when the student involved dropped away from the program
due to a death in her family. During their days at WKMS these
students typically do jobs in all areas of the broadcast unit.
One, an eighth grader, wrote copy for a press-release going
out the next day
most of which was useable.
We seem to be in the final year of
a very successful employment relationship with a high school
student recruited in fall, 2003. This student has won an award
from the Kentucky Broadcasters Association with feature news
production that we have used on the air. We intend to begin
a new relationship with a high school student for the coming
year.
WKMS-FM recruited a new African-American
team for the program Soulflight in 2005, which has resulted
in a continuing relationship with the Office of Minority Affairs
on campus and the recruitment of new student on-air talent.
This new team received broadcast training and work with the
WKMS program director gaining experience in presenting their
three hour weekly program.
