Volume 4: Issue 25 ~ March 17, 2008
Thanks To YOU...
Because of the generosity of our Friends - contributors and volunteers - the March fundraiser was a success, and the Four River's Region's public radio home is stronger and better equipped to weather the year ahead. WE CAN'T DO WITHOUT YOU, and there are no better Friends to public radio than you in the Four Rivers region.
Thanks.

WKMS Newsroom's Nicole Erwin
Receives Hearst Broadcast Award

Today the William Randolph Hearst Foundation announced the student radio and television broadcast finalists selected in the January Journalism Awards Program broadcast competition. This particular category - Competition Two - involved News. The top five winners in both radio and television were selected from among 26 radio and 54 television entries submitted. Among the top five radio finalists was our very own Nicole Erwin of the WKMS Newsroom. As a semifinalist, Erwin will submit an additional tape for a semifinal round of judging where five students in radio and five in television will be chosen to compete in the program's national broadcast news championships in San Francisco.

Nicknamed "Sparky" by station staff because of her energy and quick-wittedness, Erwin's been a solid member of the WKMS Newsroom team for close to two years now. We look forward to cheering her on as she heads attempts to compete in the championship round.

Here's looking at you Sparky! Congrats and thanks for all your excellent work and dedication.

Heard Any Good Books Lately?

For nearly 45 years Radio Reader host Dick Estell has brought literature books into the homes and automobiles of people throughout the nation. And thankfully so, as in our busy day-to-day lives we've rarely the time to sit down and escape into the pages of a great novel. All is not lost however. I've good news-for you book lovers out there. If you tune your radio to
WKMS every weeknight at 6:30, you can enjoy 30 minutes of newly-published, award winning literature while you do what you must.

On March 6, Estell began Michael White's 2007 bestseller Soul Catcher - the pre-civil war story of a scarred and troubled American bounty hunter who while in search of people who don't want to be found, finds himself. This reading carries through April 23, and will be followed by another popular work, yet to be announced. As soon as I know what that work is, I'll let you know!

Catch Radio Reader on WKMS Monday through Friday at 6:30 p.m.
