Minors on the Road

Frankfort, KY – A Kentucky lawmaker wants to require adult supervision of children under the age of 14 who collect money for civic or other groups along roadsides. Democratic Representative Jeff Greer says he got the idea to draft the legislation when he saw unsupervised minors conducting a roadside fundraiser in his community.

Jobless Rates for the Year

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Office of Employment and Training reports the state jobless rate increased two percent from November 2007 to November 2008. 116 Kentucky counties saw increases. In Western Kentucky, Calloway County's rate rose from four-point-seven to almost six percent. Christian County saw one of the most dramatic increases, shooting up from six-point-five to eight and a half percent by the end of last month.

Disaster Preparedness for Chronic Disease Patients

Frankfort, KY – State officials now offer disaster preparedness materials for individuals with chronic disease. The materials benefit those with, among other things, hypertension, heart disease, or diabetes. Public health commissioner William Hacker says a resource guide will help chronically ill patients take necessary steps to prepare for disasters and emergencies. Janet Lutrell (LUH-trull) manages the chronic disease prevention branch.

Soldier Dies in Afghanistan

Paktika, Afghanistan – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear today recognized the sacrifice of a Fort Campbell soldier who died last week in Afghanistan. Corporal Charles Gaffney Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona died when his combat post received enemy rocket fire. The Governor will order flags to half-staff on the day of Gaffney's funeral. Arrangements are pending.

Pension Reform

Frankfort, KY – As they work to cut budget gaps, cities and counties in Kentucky may get some relief on their employee retirement costs. Governor Steve Beshear has announced more recommendations for pension reform in the upcoming legislative session. He wants to allow cities and counties to spread out their required contributions over ten years rather than the current five-year period.
