Beshear Still Considering What to Do on Hemp Bill

Gov. Steve Beshear has until Saturday to sign or veto a bill that would open the door to industrial hemp farming in Kentucky. So far, he hasn't said what he'll do.

The General Assembly passed the bill last Tuesday in the final minutes of this year's legislative session, giving the governor 10 days excluding Sundays to veto it.

Quinn Launches Cyber Security Contest

Gov. Pat Quinn is launching a statewide competition to identify and train Illinois residents for jobs in cyber security. The Illinois Cyber Challenge is free and open to anyone, but Quinn says it will specifically target veterans, many of whom already have training in the field.

The challenge will involve three online tests, each with a pre-test tutorial. The top scorers in the online exams will be invited to a championship competition. A special Veterans Cyber Camp is also being held this summer.

Illinois Businesses Push Immigration Reform

A new group of business leaders wants to recruit 300 CEOs and 1,000 small businesses in Illinois to push for "common sense" bipartisan immigration reform.

The Illinois Business Immigration Coalition includes leaders from Peoria-based Caterpillar as well as Motorola Solutions, the University of Illinois, trade groups and immigration-rights advocates. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel also backs the coalition.

Tennessee Lawmakers Could Require EpiPens in Schools

A proposal is advancing in the Tennessee Legislature that would require at least two epinephrine auto-injectors in all public and private schools in the state.

Proponents of the legislation say it's necessary for children who may not carry a so-called EpiPen, a device designed to quickly treat serious allergic reactions, or for children who have their first reaction at school. The proposal is expected to be heard next week in the House and Senate finance committees.

Wet Weather Hampers Controlled Burns in Shawnee Forest

Wet weather has dampened some under-brush maintenance at the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois.

WSIL-TV reports that crews in the sprawling forest haven't been able to do as many controlled burns as they'd like because of wet conditions. Shawnee’s fuel specialist Scott Crist, says the burns help curb the potential spread of any fire that might erupt on the acreage. The controlled fires also help reduce shade that could kill off native grasses and flowers that need sunlight.

Volunteers are needed for Land Between The Lakes annual spring cleanup April 13. Volunteers will spruce up the Turkey Bay Off-Highway Vehicle Area trails plant trees, pick up litter and performing trail maintenance.

Beshear Names Mayfield Man to Kentucky Education Board

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has appointed Mayfield’s Trevor R. Bonnstetter to Kentucky’s Board of Education. Bonnstetter lead’s West Kentucky Rural Telephone, and replaces Dorothy Combs, whose term has expired.

Tennessee Doctors to Check Patient History When Prescribing Painkillers

Beginning today Tennessee doctors prescribing painkillers and other controlled substances are required to check their patients' prescription history to prevent abuse and doctor shopping.

The new requirement signed into law last year put doctors on the front line of Tennessee's battle with some of the nation's highest prescription drug abuse rates. The state's Controlled Substance Monitoring Database has been around since 2006 and now clinicians prescribing any opioid or benzodiazepine are required to check that database first.

UPDATE: The Calloway County Sheriffs' Office is reporting both Ben and Cameron Davis have been found near New Concord. The two were spotted walking through a nearby field by one of the family's neighbors this morning.

Road Work To Begin On I-24

Motorists should get prepared for lane restrictions along sections of Interstate 24. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the work zone restrictions are expected to go into effect on Monday. Lanes are expected to be closed on a stretch of I-24 in Christian County from near the 85 mile-marker to the 93 mile-marker near the Tennessee state line.
