Kala Dunn

Operations Assistant and Board Operator

Kala Dunn is a native of Princeton, Ky. She’s a 2006 graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy with a concentration in flute performance and a 2010 graduate of Murray State University with a B.M. Piano Performance degree. She is the Community/Society Editor for the Murray Ledger & Times. She performs as a singer with the Todd Hill Orchestra and is the regular bassist for the Paducah Jazz Ensemble and the Eddy Grove Trio. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, running, and listening to music. A few of her favorite artists are Anita O’Day, Charlie Parker, and Carmen McRae. She lives in Hamlin, Ky.

Halloween was first used in the 16th century as a Scottish variant of All Hallow's Even. It began as linked to the Celtic festival Samhain, marking preparations for winter. The souls of the dead were said to revisit their homes on Samhain, feasting at the table with the living... Mwahahaha!

Hurricane Sandy is the largest Atlantic tropical system on record, stretching from the Caribbean to Canada. She flooded heavily populated areas, left millions without power, claimed 87 lives overall (so far), and closed Wall Street. Sandy is now a post-tropical cyclone moving northwest. Best known as an the host of The Joy of Painting on PBS,  he introduced millions to painting by breaking down the process of oil painting in to simple steps, often transforming "happy little accidents" into trees and bushes. Datebook: October 26 - Patriot Act Signed 11 Years Ago

The controversial Patriot Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush on this day in 2001. A response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, the act reduced restrictions in the gathering of intelligence, expanded Sec. of Treasury's authority over transactions, and broadened discretion over deportation. In 2011, President Barack Obama used an auto-pen to extend some key provisions.

There’s a Zombies vs. Superheroes 3-mile walk and fun run Saturday morning at Kentucky Dam Village State Park.  Prizes are awarded for scariest, most creative, cutest, and all-around best costumes.  Registration starts at 10 at the Kentucky Dam Village Beach Parking Lot, and the run/walk starts at 11. Proceeds support CASA of Calloway and Marshall Counties.

Datebook: October 24 - Houdini's Final Performance 86 Years Ago

Famous escape artist Harry Houdini arrived at the Garrick Theater on this day in 1926 with a fever of 104, and despite being diagnosed with appendicitis, and having been punched in the stomach several times by an over-eager art student, he took to the stage. He died of peritonitis due to a ruptured appendix a week later, on Halloween.

Datebook: October 23 - The Smurfs Debut 54 Years Ago

On this day in 1958, those loveable blue dwarves appeared for the first time in La flute à six schtroumpfs, a Belgian comic by cartoonist Peyo. Standing three-apples high, the smurfberry munching creatures often smurfed to the smurf to smurf the smurfing Gargamel and his cat Azrael. Some critics have called the cartoon an example of socialism or totalitarianism in Europe. We call it a smurfing good time.

Datebook: October 22 - 1st Recorded Parachute Jump 215 Years Ago

Andre-Jacques Garnerin invented the frameless parachute, but he proved he was more than just full of hot air when he descended 3,000 feet in a silk parachute from a hot air balloon, into a crowd of spectators in Parc Monceau. He landed unharmed minus a few scrapes and the crowd literally fell in love.

Datebook: October 19 - Auguste Lumiere Turns 150

Happy birthday to one half of the Lumiere brothers, the earliest filmmakers in history. Auguste and Louis patented the process of moving film through a camera and projector, showing their first film in 1895, of workers leaving their factory. Unfortunately, Louis felt "the cinema is an invention without any future."
