New Media Promotion Coordinator, Host of Weekend Energy

Matt "McG" Markgraf joined the WKMS News Team in January 2007, while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in theatre at Murray State. Now he's got a master's degree in creative writing and is hard at work on "the next great American novel" - that is - when he’s not designing and updating the web site, producing commentaries and mixing up some Weekend Energy. Matt enjoys all kinds of music, but has a fondness for wicked beats. He’s at the station throughout the day and sometimes late at night working during the informative bliss of BBC World Service. In March 2011, he was named New Media & Promotions Coordinator for WKMS.

Graduating the WKMS Spring Fundraiser

Dr. Barbara Cobb

Murray, KY – Last Saturday, while I was celebrating Commencement with my Murray State colleagues, I was thinking about beginnings and endings. I love the word Commencement: the name for the end of a college or high school or middle school or kindergarten or preschool career identifies that event not as an end, but as a beginning.

"I was a poop head before supporting WKMS"

Murray, KY – I had to drive myself to Toledo, Ohio last week.

I got an early start, for me, and was cruising down I-24 listening to Morning Edition. Enjoying the familiar voices of Steve and Renee, Todd and Kate. And then. There I was on the exciting Western Kentucky Parkway and Oh, ugh. The further I went, the more WKMS got staticky but I refused to give up. Got to the point where I could only hear about every tenth word, but I would NOT TOUCH THAT DIAL and then it was just gone.

"I am connected to the world because of WKMS"

Murray, KY – When I moved from New Jersey to Kentucky twenty-one years ago, friends sent me sympathy cards. They thought I'd be isolated, out of the main stream, and warned of the usual southern stereotypes: No more merlot, just moonshine. Toss out the business suits and replace them with flour sack dresses. Start using words like "yall", phrases such as, "I reckon." It wouldn't be long, they swore, that I'd be saying, "I'm fixin' to go Wal-mart."

Of course, they were wrong.

"April is the Coolest Month"

Robert Valentine

Murray, KY – You know the saying, "April showers bring May flowers." April is the first full month of spring and for many it evokes a spirited new beginning, for others: RAIN. Commentator Robert Valentine gives April a proverbial umbrella and says, it's not the "cruelest month," it's the "coolest month."

April is the cruelest month,
breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land,
mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

"What Happened? - Some Easter Thoughts"

Dr. Joe Fuhrmann

Murray, KY – The Easter miracle is a vital, and some would say indispensable, part of Christian doctrine. As Easter Sunday approaches, commentator and Murray State history professor Dr. Joe Fuhrmann asks believers and non-believers to take a moment to consider what happened on that day.

Easter is a special time for Christians.
