[Audio] MSU Department of Music Presents Hansel and Gretel Opera

Murray State Opera Workshop?, Facebook

Murray State University’s Department of Music presents Hansel and Gretel this weekend at the Performing Arts Hall. Dr. Maribeth Crawford and three cast members preview the show on Sounds Good with Tracy Ross.

Students are performing a 45 minute version of the 2.5 hour opera. Crawford says the show is in English and serves as a fun, approachable introduction to opera. The quick pace story is family friendly. In fact, Crawford says she is hoping to pull in a young audience. She says people will probably recognize most of the songs though they may not have realized they are from EngelbertHumperdinck’sHansel and Gretel.

The cast began practicing the music over the summer but have only rehearsed for five weeks. The students say it is a fun challenge to both sing opera and act at the same time.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and younger. The maximum charge per family is $15.

Tracy started working for WKMS in 1994 while attending Murray State University. After receiving his Bachelors and Masters degrees from MSU he was hired as Operations/Web/Sports Director in 2000.
