Brrrr! Take a Polar Plunge for Special Olympics in Western Kentucky

Western Kentucky Polar Plunge, Facebook

The Polar Plunge takes its sixth annual dive in western Kentucky on February 21 at Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park, where more than 800 are expected to jump into frigid water to benefit Special Olympics groups in the region. Coordinator Laura Miller joins Kate Lochte on Sounds Good to talk about how to register for the costume contest, what it's like to take the plunge and what happens if you're "too chicken" to jump.

Laura Miller says its an energetic morning on the day of the Polar Plunge, kicking off with a 5K polar run across the dam and back, meeting up at the lodge for opening ceremonies and a costume contest (competing for the golden plunger award). After that, the main event is a  jump off the courtesy dock at the lodge. Five people jump at a time. Don't worry, Marshall and McCracken County Rescue Squads are there to help if needed.

The event is a signature one for fundraising efforts by area Special Olympics groups. Last year, the event raised over $113,000 for Special Olympics Kentucky, area awareness campaigns and the healthy athletes program (which pairs athletes with shoes, eyewear and dental care).
