Take a step back through time Saturday at Land Between the Lakes' Homeplace 1850's Independence Day Celebration. Experience how early Kentucky settlers celebrated this holiday with old time music, a famous statesman, the raising of a liberty pole, games and high technology: a hot air balloon. Lead Interpreter Cindy Earls speaks with Kate Lochte on Sounds Good about why this was a big holiday for families then as it is now.
Preparations for the celebration beging from 10 am to 1 pm, when the events officially kick off featuring old time music on the lawn with The Dixie Volunteers. From 1 to 4, meet the famous statesman Henry Clay, raise a liberty pole, the ladies toss skillets, men toss horseshoes, couples toss eggs! There's also fresh watermelon and ice cream 1850s' style (eat it quick or that ice will melt). The event is capped off with a hot air balloon ascension, which Earls says was high technology in the 1850s.
