CHART: Half of Kentucky Children Still Aren't Kindergarten Ready

Half of Kentucky children who entered kindergarten this school year were actually prepared for it.

That’s according to results from a kindergarten screener - a type of survey that all Kentucky students take within the first month of school. It’s a one percentage point increase over last year.

In our region, most counties met the state average or even better.

Graves County stood atop the highest with over 64 percent of its kids showing kindergarten readiness.

Lyon and Christian Counties struggled slightly at 45 and 42 percent, respectively.

Officials use the results to highlight the importance of early childhood development and education.

Education Commissioner Terry Holliday has said the screeners are also used as a tool for teachers to assess their students’ needs.
