Clarksville Economy
By Angela Hatton
Clarksville, TN – Although the nation faces a growing economic slowdown, Clarksville, Tennessee officials claim their town remains competitive. Clarksville-Montgomery County Economic Development Council President James Chavez says housing prices continue to rise. And, Chavez says, of Tennessee's major cities, Clarksville has the highest median household income and the lowest poverty rate. The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle reports officials continue to court big industries, including Hemlock Speculation Corporation, to locate at their industrial megasite. However, unemployment is up around town and monthly building permits have declined.
