Thursday Update: Clarksville Police have identified the man as 39-year-old Eugene Bompers of Clarksville.

Original Story (From The Associated Press):

Police in Tennessee say a 39-year-old man fleeing from authorities has died after trying to swim across a river.

Clarksville police spokesman Jim Knoll tells The Leaf Chronicle that police pulled over a Jeep with an unlit brake light Tuesday night. Knoll says a male passenger exited the vehicle and fled toward a river.

Police say officers recognized the man and knew he had several arrests warrants on file, including one for aggravated assault. The man's name hasn't been released.

Police say the man jumped into the river and tried to swim across before yelling for help. They say officers tried to help the man but were unable to reach him before he disappeared beneath the water.

Officials found the man's body about an hour later and pronounced him dead.
