Kentucky Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jack Conway says the Jefferson Davis statue in the Capitol rotunda belongs elsewhere, and he’ll urge the agency that oversees the state’s historic properties to move it.
Conway says the statue should be in "a museum where history is taught, rather than the capitol where laws are made and rights are upheld." Conway also says he will submit a public comment to the Historic Properties Commission asking for the Davis statue’s removal and the consideration of an appropriate replacement. Conway’s statement comes a day after Governor Steve Beshear asked the commission to review the rotunda’s monuments in context of the Commonwealth’s history.
