Governor Beshear Breaks Ground for Murray's Career Center

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear stopped in Murray and Marshall County today to call attention to a new career center in Murray and to formally break ground on the ongoing Kentucky Lake Bridge project.

The Murray-Calloway Economic Development Corporation is constructing a 6,200-square-foot building at West Industrial Park in Murray and will lease it to the state to house the career center. Gov. Beshear says the corporation’s investment in a strong workforce is also an investment in attracting jobs to the region.

“It more closely ties together our economic development and our workforce development missions into a results oriented system," Gov. Beshear said. "And folks, it is an important tool, an extremely important tool, in building a more competitive Kentucky.”

Secretary of Kentucky’s Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, Thomas Zawacki, says the cabinet’s business outreach efforts also help career centers connect businesses with people who have the training and experience they need.

“What we’re trying to do across the state of Kentucky is to consolidate as many services that rely on one another in order to help Kentuckians get the training, education, and jobs that will allow them to have a sustainable family income,” Zawacki said.

At Kenlake State Resort Park, Gov. Beshear attended the ceremonial ground breaking for the Kentucky Lake Bridge, which has been among his highest transportation priorities.

“I keenly understand that the livelihoods of many people depend on the heavily traveled U.S. 68/KY 80 corridor. For this reason, it is immensely satisfying to see the shovel hit the dirt on this project after decades of conversation and planning,” Gov. Beshear said.

The new bridge will have four 11-foot-wide lanes, 4-foot shoulders and a 10-foot-wide pedestrian/bicycle path. A similar bridge is being planned to replace the Lawrence Memorial Bridge over Lake Barkley.

The Murray-Calloway Economic Development Corporation expects construction of the career center building to be completed in February of 2015. The new bridge across Kentucky Lake should be completed in 2016.
