Murray State's new head basketball coach is former lead assistant Matt McMahon. MSU Athletics Director Allen Ward announced the hire on Tuesday. McMahon, who joined former coach Steve Prohm's staff in 2011 is the Racer's 16th head coach.
It took less than 24 hours for MSU to hire Prohm's replacement. Prohm is leaving to coach the Iowa State Cyclones. The move is a bump up from the Ohio Valley Conference to the Big 12. Prohm is reportedly earning $1.5 million per year at his new school.
MSU's sports information office reports McMahon had recently taken the associate head coach position at Louisiana Tech, May 27. It's a quick turnaround for McMahon.
"My family and I have enjoyed our four years in this community and we look forward to many more. I also owe a great deal of thanks to Steve Prohm for bringing me to Murray and serving as a mentor to me," said McMahon in a release.
McMahon played college basketball at Appalachian State and graduated with a marketing degree in 2000. He served under University of Tennessee coach Buzz Peterson in 2001 as a graduate assistant. McMahon's fulltime coaching position was at his alma-mater, he moved then to UNC-Wilmington before settling in Murray for the last four years.
