KKK Recruitment Letters Circulate in Murray

A recruiting effort by the Ku Klux Klan is prompting concern among some Murray residents. Murray Police say an unknown person or group of people left flyers on driveways Saturday night.

The recruitment flyers called for “white Americans to wake up” and claimed the KKK is not a hate group “as the media wants you to believe.” Other flyers bemoaned groups like the NAACP and the democratic party. The flyer lists a national hotline that answers with a recorded message.

“I would like to thank our California Grand Dragon and his members for showing the Black Panthers and the Black Lives Matter movement protesters plus some … Mexican members that the KKK is here to stay," the message says.

MPD spokesman Sergeant Brant Shutt says the department received several calls about the flyers, but despite littering, they don’t violate any other laws. Shutt says police officers searched for and couldn’t find the vehicle distributing the fliers.

This is the second KKK recruitment effort in the last three months. Media outlets reported similar flyers distributed in Marshall County last December.

The Southern Poverty Law Center says the Ku Klux Klan has a long history of violence and is America’s oldest hate group.

Ran through town this morning. Kept seeing these rolled up flyers in the driveways. Curious I pick one up. A KKK recruiting flyer in Murray Ky. Don't think I ever remember such happening in murray. Posted by Marc Peebles on Sunday, March 6, 2016

Murray State University issued a statement in response to the flyers: "Murray State University will not tolerate any form of racism, intolerance or insensitivity. Our campus community must continue to actively engage in open and respectful discussions based on the merits of one's intellectual pursuits, not based on stereotypes and discrimination. We will be relentless in our commitment to creating an inclusive and safe learning environment.”
