U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and 1st District U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield released statements today regarding Tuesday's tornado that struck western Kentucky.
Speaking on the Senate floor, McConnell said he was thankful there were no deaths reported and expressed gratitude for Kentuckians helping one another. Congressman Whitfield offered his services in the recovery process. He also expressed relief there was no loss of life.
Senator McConnell:
“I want to say a few words about the severe weather that hit my home state of Kentucky yesterday. A large tornado touched down in Mayfield in Graves County. It damaged homes and businesses and reportedly injured ten people as it made its way through western Kentucky.
“Tornadoes were also reported in Muhlenberg and Union counties. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported in Kentucky as of the latest news reports. And Kentuckians are, as always, reaching out to help their neighbors in times of distress, with reports that local churches and businesses have opened their doors to those displaced by the tornadoes as they recover.
“We’re thinking today of all the Kentuckians who’ve been hurt by this severe weather. We continue to monitor the situation.”
Congressman Whitfield:
“My thoughts and prayers remain with all of those affected by yesterday’s devastating weather. While I am saddened that several families and businesses suffered considerable loss of property and possessions, I am also relieved there was no loss of life reported.
“I have been in communications with my staff in Kentucky who have spoken to local officials and offered my services in the recovery process. These communities are resilient, just as are all the people of Kentucky, and I know they are already hard at work helping their neighbors recover from this destruction. ”
