Kentucky’s Commissioner for the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has announced his retirement after nearly four decades of public service in natural resources, wildlife management, and agriculture.

Gregory Johnson made the announcement Friday at the Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting.

Johnson was first named to the position in 2014.

In a release, Chairman of the Fish and Wildlife Commission Jimmy Bevins and Secretary of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet Don Parkinson thanked Johnson for his service.

According to the Cabinet, highlights of Johnson’s tenure include improving waterfowl wildlife management areas in west Kentucky, supporting the population growth of grouse in Eastern Kentucky, and promoting conservation as a critical part of outdoor youth education.

Chief of Staff for the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet Frank Jemley has been named interim commissioner by Secretary Don Parkinson until a new commissioner is appointed by the Fish and Wildlife Commission.

The Fish and Wildlife Commission has established a search committee to evaluate candidates.
