Volunteer birders converge at Land Between the Lakes Saturday to take part in an annual winter bird census.

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count is an effort by the National Audubon Society to track long-term trends in bird populations. LBL Lead Naturalist John Pollpeter says birders will divide into teams and track sightings in different areas.

"What they’re looking for is how the different numbers change from year to year to year depending on weather and other factors. They’re looking at the long term population of say cardinals or bald eagles or bobwhite quails you know stuff like that.”

Pollpeter says interested birdwatchers can call the Nature Station at 270-924-2299 to sign up. The event begins at 6 a.m. on Saturday. Birders are encouraged to bring binoculars, a field guide, and lunch.
