Marshall Co. High School Begins Using Wand Metal Detectors

Nicole Erwin / WKMS

Marshall County High School, where two students were killed in a shooting last month, has begun using metal detectors as an added security precaution.

The Marshall County School District sent a statement this week saying that the use of metal detector wands began Tuesday at each of the four morning entrances.

Authorities said 14 students were wounded by gunfire and seven others injured trying to flee when a classmate opened fire on Jan. 23 before classes began at Marshall County High School. A 15-year-old boy is being held on murder and assault charges.

Last week, the school began requiring that all students have their bags, backpacks and purses checked before entering the building.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
