MSU Creates Budget Task Force Committees in Wake of Proposed State Funding Cuts

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

Murray State University has established a pair of budget task forces to identify potential program cuts.

The move is a response to Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin’s proposed state budget that will reduce higher education funding, including a nine percent cut for Murray State effective July 1st.

Before that, the university faces a 4.5 percent mid-year state appropriations reduction.

Murray State President Bob Davies, who testifiedbefore the House Budget Review Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education last week, says there are two task forces: one focused on academics and the other on support.

They’re designed to identify core services along with those that can be reduced or outright eliminated.

MSU previously announced it would suspendits search for a new Provost.

Meanwhile, a group of students have organized a march in Frankfort later this week to protest Bevin’s proposed cuts. A petitioncirculated earlier this month accrued nearly 3,500 signatures.
