New MSU Admission Standards Draw High-Achieving, Smaller Class

Murray State University’s newest freshman class shows a smaller but higher-achieving group.

The MSU Board of Regents approved new, tougher admission standards this past June, including a minimum 18 ACT composite score.  These standards won't go into effect until the 2016 fall semester.

University data shows this year’s incoming freshmen scored just over a 23 on the test.  That’s compared to last year’s 22.6 average.  High school GPAs of admitted students also rose about a tenth of a point from 2014 to 3.48.

The number of new honors students jumped nearly twenty percent.

At the same time, overall enrollment has dropped slightly, falling two percent to just under 11,000 this year.

Murray State's strategic plan seeks to address the university's goals through 2022.

This post has been updated to reflect when MSU's new admissions standards will be implemented and to correct the link to Murray State's strategic initiative plan.
