New Tennessee Education Plan Would Give School Districts More Control

Tennessee is proposing a plan that would give local school districts more control over issues such as turning around poor-performing schools.

As the Tennessean reports, state education officials yesterday released the first draft of Tennessee's version of the Every Student Succeeds Act, the federal education law President Barack Obama signed last year.  The plan emphasizes transparency, accountability and school turnaround.  Under the proposal, families would have access to more information about their schools, and districts would have more support from the state to meet expectations.  //  Education Commissioner Candice McQueen is beginning a tour of the state this week to gather input on the plan.  The Tennessee Department of Education will submit its final plan to the U.S. Department of Education in the spring.
