The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is holding a public meeting tonight to discuss the results of its special inspection into uranium hexafluoride leak at the Honeywell Metropolis plant in August.
No one was injured or exposed to the material. NRC Spokesman Roger Hannah says such meetings are not common but not unprecedented following a special inspection. He says with the level of local interest, the NRC wants to make itself accessible to the public and answer any questions.
Honeywell received a violation notice on a UF6 leak last October for failing to declare a formal alert and notify the NRC. Hannah says Honeywell officials responded appropriately this time, though he says there are some things they could have done better.
According to Honeywell spokesman Peter Dalpe, there have been 3 UF6 leaks at the plant since 2003.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 tonight at the Metropolis Community Center.
