[Slideshow] New Eggner's Ferry Bridge Walkway Features Etchings Depicting LBL Activities

When the multi-use walkway on the new Eggner’s Ferry Bridge opens, pedestrians or cyclists will notice a series of etchings cut into the galvanized steel guardrail.

The etchings, by design firm Michael Baker International, depict several scenes and activities common to the Land Between the Lakes and Kentucky Lake area, including fishing, camping and bird watching. There are also panels that show LBL’s Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Living History Museum and historic iron furnaces.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says the idea for the artwork came from the public comment phase of the bridge’s design process, nearly a decade ago.

“One of the things that was expressed during that series of meetings was people wanted the bridges to have a cultural context or tie-in with the region," Todd said.

Todd says the walkway should open "in a month or so", along with the other two lanes of the four-lane, $133 million bridge.
