State Approves Formation of 1st Multi-County/Municipal Riverport Authority in West KY

2008 National Park Service

The West Kentucky Regional Riverport Authority held their first formal meeting in Bardwell Friday.

The Ballard County Fiscal Court and the state Department for Local Government unanimously approved to allow the Authority to meet at the Caldwell County courthouse this morning.

The Authority is the state’s first multi-county and multi-municipality riverport authority aimed at establishing a legal structure for approving future private-public partnership projects within the Mississippi River region.

Project advisor Jonathan Miller said Friday the group approved bylaws, elected officers and tasked representatives to begin discussions with the private sector.

Potential projects include the adding of a regional terminal at the former Verso Plant in Wickliffe, which shuttered this year.

The WKRRA is one arm of the West Kentucky Alliance for a Vibrant Economy (WAVE) which is a regional economic development confluence.
