Original Story:

Former McCracken County judge-executive Van Newberry has died after he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle.

The collision occurred Thursday morning on Old Cairo Road, when a GMC Denali hit Newberry’s bike. The driver told police that it appeared Newberry crossed from the shoulder to the roadway before he was struck and thrown from his bicycle. Newberry was pronounced dead upon arrival at Lourdes Hospital.

McCracken County Sheriff’s Department deputies are continuing a collision investigation.

Newberry served two terms as judge-executive before opting not to run for re-election in 2014.
