An Asian carp processing facility in Ballard County is planning to double its export numbers and create new jobs in the region.
Two Rivers Fisheries in Wickliffe provides carp exports to 11 countries including China and Korea. About three dozen teams of fisherman in Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee and Missouri provide carp to the fishery. President Angie Yu says the facility began operations in 2013 exporting half a million pounds per year. Last year exports reached two million pounds. She says this year’s goal is to double that number.
“I think we can move a lot of Asian carp from the region’s water and help to clean the water system... We try to remove these carp, we try to increase the export and also we increase the local jobs,” said Yu.
Yu is also Vice President of Eco Fish Products, a new company that will process fish waste in the facility. Yu says this company is in the training process and is working to increase the number of fishermen involved.
