WKMS Exceeds Spring Fundraising Goal

Rob Canning, WKMS

WKMS listeners raised just over $130,000 in essential community support for their public radio home this past week.

Over 862 members shared their support for the local NPR station, helped along by matches from local businesses. Over 45 community members donated their time to answer phones. And guests including MSU President Dr. Bob Davies shared their time and talents on the air.

New Station Manger Chad Lampe says, “It is so refreshing to hear from hundreds of generous listeners and members of WKMS. We’re grateful to everyone and Murray State for continued support of this essential source for news and music.”

Good things happened for other non-profit organizations in the region as well. A philanthropy partnership on April 13th with Independence Bank resulted in $1776 raised for The Gentry House of Calloway County to help the transitional homeless shelter for families and children.

There were some surprises for listeners along the way as well. Kevin Fritz of Owensboro, a sustaining member of WKMS and a teacher at Hopkins County Central High School, won a mandolin signed by renowned musician, Chris Thile. Donald and Jean Bennett of Murray won a Big Green Egg grill donated from Akridge Farm Supply and Ace Hardware in Eddyville and Fredonia.

All funds raised will help WKMS continue to provide the local and national NPR programs that fulfill Murray State’s mission of educational outreach for all listeners in Western Kentucky, Southernmost Illinois and Northwest Tennessee.
