WKMS News Wins AP Awards

WKMS

WKMS is proud to announce another set of awards for its newsroom. The Kentucky Associated Press notified WKMS News that its work in 2015 for Murray State’s listener-supported public radio service has taken home KAPB awards, including the First Place award for station website and Second Place awards for Long and Short Light News Features.

Station Manager Chad Lampe said, “This news comes on the heels of another national award from the Society of Professional Journalists recognizing our documentary work. I’m thrilled for our team and our community of listeners. This is, again, evidence of great work only made possible by our supporting members.”

The WKMS website at wkms.org was named Best Website for a radio station. The site compiles all the reports from the WKMS News Room, as well as the multiple award-winning WKMS Documentaries produced for radio and online. Both WKMS and the All-Classical Music service can be listened to easily at wkms.org by clicking the “listen live” button.

Matt Markgraf won second place for Best Long Light News Feature for “Cleaning Up The Columbia Theatre, A Paducah Treasure.” The piece highlights a “clean-up day” at the Columbia Theatre on Broadway in downtown Paducah in its early phase of a six million dollar renovation project.

Allison Crawford took home a second place award for Best Short Light News Feature for “TVA Fishery Biologists Measure Kentucky Lake Health by Shocking Fish.” Last fall Crawford boarded a boat equipped with an electrode that floated near Kentucky Dam Marina bay giving off an electrical charge to stun fish. The fish floated to the top of the water unharmed, where data was recorded before the fish were released. Crawford’s feature report explains that 22 years’ worth of fish survey data obtained by this method indicate a positive trend for ecological health in Kentucky Lake.
