Hopkinsville City Council decided to bench a discussion this week regarding the city's alcohol ordinance. Much of the council's discussion focused on forcing bars within the city to close at 1 am. Currently, downtown bars are forced to stop serving alcohol at 1 am but can stay open later to allow patrons time to leave. City Chief Financial Officer Robert Martin said the council proposed forcing businesses to close at 1:30 to reduce incidences of public disturbances.

A task force aimed at overhauling Kentucky's alcoholic-beverage regulations is intentionally avoiding larger issues. Task-force member Senator Jimmy Higdon says the panel wanted to have consensus on all proposed changes. He says the group didn't address  controversial alcohol laws like closing bars during elections and preventing alcohol sales in groceries while allowing them in drug stores.

Package sales of beer are skyrocketing in Murray, according to one of the region's largest distributors. Golden Eagle Distributing transports all Anheuser-Busch Products in the Purchase area. The company is already having to extend its sales routes to almost triple the amount of locations. Company president Mark Meisenheimer  says the company has never seen this large an increase in sales and expects business will only keep growing.

The Governor's Task Force on the Study of Alcoholic Beverage Control Laws is scheduled to meet in Louisville today. Chairman Bob Vance says the meeting allows the public to comment on issues involving licensing, local option elections, and public safety issues involving the sale of alcoholic beverages.
