The top two Republicans in the Tennessee General Assembly say they support allowing the sale of wine in supermarkets. With the influx of new GOP lawmakers comes the opportunity to reshape key committees where efforts to allow wine sales have long been corked up by opponents.

Beer sales see rapid growth in Murray

Package sales of beer are skyrocketing in Murray, according to one of the region's largest distributors. Golden Eagle Distributing transports all Anheuser-Busch Products in the Purchase area. The company is already having to extend its sales routes to almost triple the amount of locations. Company president Mark Meisenheimer  says the company has never seen this large an increase in sales and expects business will only keep growing.

Sebree Alcohol Vote Fails

Voters in Sebree, Kentucky have decided against allowing restaurants to sell liquor by the drink with meals. The Gleaner reports that the measure on yesterday's ballot in the Webster County city failed by a 3-2 margin. The final vote was 270-180.

Alcohol Referendum on Sebree Ballot

Another western Kentucky city holds an alcohol vote tomorrow. Sebree residents choose whether to allow liquor by the drink sales, at the same time they choose a president and fill a slate of local seats. The measure would only allow alcohol sales at restaurants that seat more than 50 people and derive at least 70 percent of their gross receipts from food sales. Drinks would be served only in conjunction with meals.

Murray Issues First Retail Alcohol Licenses

Murray’s Alcohol Beverage Control Administrator has issued the city’s first retail alcohol licenses. Sergeant Kendra Clere says two gas stations and a pharmacy received beer licenses today. Clere expects to issue more alcohol licenses this week as state ABC officials confirm more applications. However, package alcohol stores will likely not open for several more weeks because the process of reviewing those applications takes longer.
