Historian John Coski on the Confederate Battle Flag

In early April, the Sons of Confederate Veterans announced plans for a park to be built on private land just off of Exit 16 on I-24 in McCracken County.  It's intended as a memorial to the area's Confederate soldiers.  And at the center of the park, and an emerging controversy, is a flagpole, upon which will fly the red field, blue cross, and thirteen white stars of the Confederate battle flag.  The flag has been a lightning rod for controversy for years; the SCV insists it’s a symbol of heritage while opponents see it as an emblem of racism symbol.  For some perspective, Todd Hatton speaks

The Art of Writing and the Value of Grammar

If you’ve ever driven down the highway and spotted a sign with a misplaced apostrophe or seen syntax so teeth-grindingly bad you almost ran off the road, then this next commentary will be music to your ears.  Darlene Mazzone tells us that, for her, writing is every bit the art form, one all the more beautiful when the grammar is good.

Paducah Symphony Ends First Season with New Director

It’s been about 8 months since the Paducah Symphony Orchestra has been under the watch of new executive Director Daniel Sene.  Not too long before Sene’s arrival came Artistic Director and Conductor Maestro Raffeale Ponti.  They are rounding out their first season together. This weekend. They’re visited the WKMS studios to talk about the PSO, and their history and the future of the orchestra.

Murray Half Marathon Road Closures

Several roads in Murray and Calloway County will be closed tomorrow morning for the Murray Half Marathon. Runners  start at the Center for Health and Wellness on Poplar Street at 7 a.m. Traffic will be restricted in downtown Murray, Central Park, and on U.S. Hwy 641. Stretches of Main Street, Poplar, Bailey Road and Poor Farm road will also be closed. The Murray Calloway Endowment for Healthcare hosts the marathon to promote health awareness. Organizers expect traffic to return to normal after 11 a.m. Below is a complete list of the roads affected by the event:

Postmark Commemorating Kentucky Battle

A special postmark is being issued as part of the re-enactment of the Civil War Battle of Sacramento in western Kentucky. The U.S. Postal Service will offer the postmark starting Tuesday as part of a series of commemorations marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which took place from 1861 to 1865. The postmark will be available at a log cabin near the battlegrounds in Sacramento. The Battle of Sacramento took place on December 28, 1861 between Union Major Eli H. Murray and Confederate Col. Nathan Bedford Forrest.
