Datebook: September 17 - Constitution & Antietam

The US Constitution was signed on this day in 1787, which also happens to be the bloodiest-single day battle in American history, 75 years later, in the Battle of Antietam (1862) - the first major battle in the Civil War on Union soil. United we stand, divided we fall.

A traditional Japanese dance troupe called Iwami Kagura performs tomorrow night at 7 in Wrather Auditorium on the campus of Murray State University.  The dynamic Kagura dance form is known for its up-tempo drum rhythms and spectacular costumes.  The performance is free and open to the public.

Datebook: September 14 - Blue Jays Set Home Run Record 25 Years Ago

On this day in 1987, the Toronto Blue Jays set an MLB record hitting 10 home runs in a single game, defeating the Baltimore Orioles 18-3, and ending Cal Ripken Jr.'s streak of 8,243 consecutive innings played.

Indulge in International Chocolate Day today, in honor of Milton Hershey's birthday. The US consumes over 3 billion pounds of chocolate each year. I may be responsible for like a third of that.

Land Between the Lakes celebrates the Elk and Bison Prairie on Saturday from 10 to 4 at the Golden Pond Visitor Center.  Watch a historical hunting presentation, learn about the benefits of native prairie plants, and take van tours of the prairie.  See details at lbl.org.

Datebook: September 12 - Flatwoods Monster Sighted 60 Years Ago

An alleged alien or cryptid was reported sighted on this day in 1952 in Flatwoods, West Virginia. Some said it was a large, pulsating ball of light - others say it was ten-feet tall with a red, glowing face and green body, with stubby arms and long fingers, wearing a dark pleated skirt. Some suggest it was just a barn owl... A freaky alien barn owl.

The Humane Society of Calloway County holds a yard sale from 7 to 2 Saturday at the Little Shop of Collars on the court square.  Drop off yard sale donations this week from 10 to 5:30 at the Little Shop of Collars.  No clothing or televisions, but all other items are welcome.
