Senate Budget Committee Meeting

Richmond, KY – While most of state agencies face spending cuts of more than eight-percent, the governor wants to spend more on the Kentucky Horse Park and the State Fair Board in the current year. State Budget Director Mary Lassiter explained their reasons to the Senate Budget Committee. Lassiter was quizzed by Lebanon Senator Jimmy Higdon, who asked her about the nine-million dollar spending increase.

Divers Checking Piers at Eggner's Ferry Bridge

Murray, KY – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet divers are in the water today examining the piers of the Eggner's Ferry Bridge. The piers hold up the sections of roadway adjacent to the 300 foot piece that collapsed in last week's collision with a cargo vessel. KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says the divers' findings will be a major factor in determining the crossing's future. He says,

Judge Pushes Back State Legislature Filing Deadlines

Frankfort, KY – A Franklin Circuit Court judge has pushed back the filling deadline for state legislative candidates.

In response to a lawsuit claiming the new redistricting maps are unconstitutional, Judge Phillip Shepard issued a restraining order moving the deadline back one week. Shepard also set a hearing on the constitutionality argument for Monday morning.

Ron Paul Files in Kentucky

Frankfort, KY – Texas congressman and presidential hopeful Ron Paul is the third Republican to enter Kentucky's May 22nd primary election. The Paul campaign made it official yesterday, just before today's filing deadline. Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have also filed to run in the commonwealth. Because of the timing of Kentucky's primary, presidential nominees typically are decided before Kentucky voters have their say. But the state could be important this year in an especially close race.

Frankfort Politicians Face off in Fight Over Gambling Amendment

Frankfort, KY – Responding to critics, Governor Steve Beshear says he believes he already has ample support in the state Senate to send an expanded gambling amendment to the ballot.

Beshear says there are 23 state senators who would vote in favor of the measure. That doesn't mean all 23 support gambling though, as some senators, like Republican Damon Thayer, have said they will vote to put the issue on the ballot but aren't supportive of gambling in Kentucky. Opponents have said the governor does not have the votes in his favor.
