Severe Thunderstorms in the Region

The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for our area. NWS is reporting winds in excess of 60 mph and penny-sized hail.

Affected Counties are:

WESTERN CALDWELL COUNTY
CALLOWAY COUNTY
SOUTHERN CRITTENDEN COUNTY.
LIVINGSTON COUNTY
LYON COUNTY
MARSHALL COUNTY
TRIGG COUNTY

Warning is in effect until 8:15 PM.

Kentucky Utilities Sending Crews to Help with Isaac Damage

Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas and Electric have answered the call to help with restoration efforts following Hurricane Isaac. KU spokesman Cliff Feltham,

“What we have decided to do is send roughly two hundred of our…a combination of employees and our contractor crews south to be deployed wherever they are needed, and they left early this morning.”

Feltham says the crews will report to a staging area in either South Tennessee or North Mississippi, and will fan out from there.  He believes their first assignment will be in the Baton Rouge area.

Severe Weather in the Four Rivers Region

From the National Weather Service:

At 3:40 pm: A line of intense showers and thunderstorms is currently moving through southwest Indiana and west Kentucky. It will continue pressing southeast and affect the rest of southwest IN and west KY. Very heavy rain and some severe storms (damaging winds/hail) will be possible. These storms are also producing a good deal of lightning. Light to moderate rain is falling behind the main line as well.

The region is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10:00 PM tonight with a 60% chance of rain and possible thunderstorms.
Primary hazards include damaging winds and hail. Storm movement will be southeast up to 35 MPH. Low around 61.

Doctor Describes Aftermath of Tornadoes in West Liberty

There have been twenty-one confirmed deaths in Kentucky after tornadoes tore through the state on Friday. Seven of those deaths were in Morgan County, where the county seat, West Liberty, was leveled by the storms. Louisville resident Alex Wright is a doctor with Norton Healthcare Systems. West Liberty is his hometown, and his extended family still lives there. He headed to the town Saturday morning to see how he could help, and described the scene he saw driving through downtown to Kentucky Public Radio’s Erica Peterson.
